Commissioning Music Little Guide...
Commissioning a musical work means engaging a professional composer to create an original piece of music for an event or any special purpose. Anyone can commission music, and any style of music can be requested.
Price is based on the length of the work, number of musicians involved, sponsor’s budget and composer’s reputation. The Canadian League of Composers has established a list of base prices. Remember that the artist’s fee is negotiable.
Copying expenses are not part of the composing fee. Copying costs, including individual sheet music scores from the composition and costs for photocopying materials, are the sponsor’s responsibility.
Costs for public presentations, recordings and personal appearances are over and above the composition fee. It is best to clearly establish in advance the composer’s expected participation in rehearsals, recordings and public presentations.
The composer retains all author’s rights for the commissioned work. These rights are subject to Canadian and international copyright laws. The composer receives a share of licensing fee revenues as they apply to public presentation, publishing and recording of his works. The composer usually retains possession of the original manuscript in manuscript form or as an electronic document. He may give copies to the sponsor. The musical score is the property of the composer or his publisher, although the sponsor may have rights for exclusive use over a certain predetermined period of time. Possession of the printed or recorded material does not automatically confer the right to present, publish or record. All public presentations of the commissioned work, including during its creation, are subject to obtaining the composer’s permission.
