I was asked to do an arrangement of an old French Christmas tune, dating from the 16th or
17th century, for vocal quartet. As it evolved the project became a piece for choir, going
beyond the simple arrangement and ending up as a composition inspired by the principal
melody. The harmonic coloration evokes the early 20th century French school.
Andrée de Repentigy, who first sent me this song, was a member of the acclaimed
Tudor Singers of Montréal vocal ensemble, directed by Wayne Riddell. Wayne did me
the honour of including this work in a Tudor Singers concert presented in Quebec City.
